Biomaster 2 External Canister Filter - What's New?
The New Biomaster 2 External Canister Filter
The long-awaited upgrade to the highly popular Biomaster filter is finally here: introducing the new Biomaster 2! This enhancement has been in development for some time, with Oase carefully considering customer feedback to improve upon the already renowned first version of the Biomaster series which was released over 6 years ago!
What is the Difference between the Oase Biomaster and the Biomaster 2?
So what's new? It looks almost identical from the outside, but the internals are where the biggest difference has been made, so let's take a look!
Increased Flow Rate
The Biomaster 2 offers significant improvements over previous versions, delivering up to 25% higher flow rates, depending on the model. The flow rate increases are as follows:
- 25% increase for the Biomaster 2 250 and 250 Thermo
- 20% increase for the Biomaster 2 350 and 350 Thermo
- 25% increase for the Biomaster 2 600 and 600 Thermo
- 12% increase for the Biomaster 2 850 and 850 Thermo
Inlet Tube Upgrade
The new pre-filter tube features more, and larger holes, facilitating a greater flow rate. Additionally, the design appears sturdier and boasts a much improved aesthetic.
Curved Motor/Head Cover
The newly developed motor head cover is smooth and features a smooth curved design, this helps to dispel trapped air and in effect can prevent the filter from purging as much.
Improved Energy Efficiency
Due to the increased flow rate, the filter is more efficient and has a lower operating wattage.
For example, the Oase Biomaster 2 850 has a maximum power consumption of 32W, however its recorded average power consumption has been measured at 22W, thats nearly a 30% energy reduction!
New Design Modulated Inlet and Spray Bar
The included pipework now comes with a sleeker rounded design. The included spray bar is modulated and can fit together to form your desired size, it also features a valve for controlling the flow rate that can be fitted to the pipework outlet.
10 PPI Pre Filter Foams with 600 and 850 models
These coarse sponges optimise flow and reduce the need for cleaning as frequently, however, you should consider that finer debris particles could be going into the internal filter rather than being trapped in the pre-filter.
We hope this helps you in identifying the upgrades to the new filter from Oase, you can find each new model here on our website:

Upgrades to consider to your External Filter
As aquascapers, we often prefer a minimalist aesthetic when it comes to accessories. This is why we choose clear tubing instead of the darker tubing that typically comes with most filters. Additionally, we use clear glass pipes to create an 'invisible' look.
You may also find that you require more from your biological filtration. While the included sponge media is certainly perfect for the job, many of our customers opt to add pumice-based media to their filters, including ourselves, this can also be a good idea when your aquariums aren't heavily planted such as in cichlid tanks as there are no plants to deal with the nitrates. This type of media has a higher surface area for beneficial bacteria to colonise.
In our gallery aquascapes, we often replace some of the sponge trays with extra pumice-based media to enhance filtration.
