Easy Beginner Aquarium Plants
Easy Beginner Aquarium Plants
As a dedicated aquascaping store, we frequently welcome new visitors who are exploring our planted aquariums in our gallery for the first time. The most common question we receive is, "What plants are easy to take care of?" Answering this can be tricky as it often depends on whether the aquarium contains a soil or sand/gravel substrate, as well as the presence of CO2 and the intensity of lighting used.
For aquariums using soil but no CO2 injection and a basic starter light, we recommend the following aquatic plants:
Most Cryptocoryne species are easy aquarium plants. However, 'crypt melt' can scare new hobbiests as the plant leaves melt away. This is a normal process as they are adapting to their new conditions or underwater state, and fresh new leaves will regrow in a few weeks of them establishing.
Cryptocoryne plants come in a variety of species, each with its own unique leaf shape and colouration. These plants do well in low to moderate light and prefer nutrient-rich substrate. Cryptocoryne adds a pop of color and texture to your aquascape, creating a natural and vibrant underwater environment.
A few favourites of ours include:
For aquariums using sand or gravel we always recommend using epiphyte aquarium plants, meaning the plant attaches and grows on wood and rock, some of the plants we recommend are:
-
Bucephalandra species such as:
-
Anubias species such as:
-
Anubias petite
Anubias species are another beginner-friendly plant known for thier resilience and slow growth rate. This plant does well in low to moderate light and can be attached to decor or substrate. Avoid burying the rhizome to prevent rotting. Some species are a little trickier than others but the ones we have mentioned above are popular amongst beginners.
-
Microsorum (java fern) species such as:
Java Ferns are a popular choice among aquarists for its hardy nature and low light requirements. This plant thrives in a variety of water conditions and can be attached to driftwood or rocks for a natural look. Simply anchor the rhizome to your desired surface and watch it flourish with minimal care.
What is an Easy Red Aquarium Plant to Grow?
In our experience here at Horizon Aquatics, the Super Red Ludwigia is the easiest red aquarium plant to grow. It is less demanding compared to other red plants like Alternanthera Reineckii Mini. We recommend using an aquarium soil base rather than sand or gravel, but it can still grow well without CO2 injection.
This plant is known for its vibrant red colour and relatively low maintenance requirements. It can thrive in various water conditions and lighting levels, making it suitable for beginners or anyone looking to add a colorful touch to their aquarium without the need for CO2 supplementation. With proper care and just a little attention to lighting and nutrient levels, Ludwigia palustris 'Super Red' can flourish and add a pop of colour to your aquatic setup.
