Sagittaria subulata, commonly known as Dwarf Sagittaria, is a versatile and easy-to-grow foreground plant that brings a natural, grassy look to the aquarium. Native to South America, it’s a reliable choice for both beginners and experienced aquascapers looking to create lush, carpet-like areas with minimal effort.
Appearance
This plant produces narrow, ribbon-like green leaves that grow in compact rosettes. As it spreads, it forms dense clusters that resemble underwater grass. Depending on conditions such as lighting, nutrients, substrate and water hardness, it can remain low and compact or grow taller, offering flexibility in how it’s used within a layout.
Aquascaping Use
Ideal for foreground to midground placement, Sagittaria subulata spreads via short runners, gradually forming a thick, natural carpet. Plant individual portions 2–4 cm apart to allow space for lateral growth. In smaller tanks or under lower light, it typically stays compact, while in nutrient-rich conditions it may grow taller—making it equally useful as a background filler if needed.
Care & Requirements
Difficulty: Easy
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast
Height: 5–50 cm (depending on conditions)
Lighting: Low to medium
CO₂: Not required, but beneficial
This is a highly adaptable plant that thrives in a wide range of conditions. In richer substrates and stronger lighting, it may grow taller, so occasional trimming or strategic placement helps maintain the desired height.
Propagation
Sagittaria subulata spreads naturally through runners, sending out new plantlets that root into the substrate. These can be left to form a dense carpet or repositioned to control coverage and layout.
Under the right conditions, this plant may produce long flower stems that reach the water’s surface, where small, delicate white flowers bloom—adding a unique and unexpected detail to your aquarium.
