Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ is a striking and adaptable rosette plant originating from the rivers of Sri Lanka. Known for its broader leaves and beautifully flecked patterning, it brings a rich, natural texture to aquascapes while remaining easy to care for across a wide range of setups.
Appearance
This variety features wider, gently undulating leaves with subtle mottled patterning, giving it a more textured and dynamic look than many other Cryptocoryne species. Depending on conditions, its colour can range from greenish-brown to deep reddish tones. It typically grows to a height of 15–30 cm, forming full rosettes that spread 10–20 cm wide.
Aquascaping Use
Cryptocoryne undulatus ‘Red’ is ideal for midground placement, where its size and leaf structure can create depth and a natural transition between foreground and background plants. It works particularly well in nature-style layouts and planted tanks where a softer, more organic feel is desired.
Care & Requirements
Difficulty: Easy
Growth Rate: Medium
Height: 20–30 cm
Lighting: Low to medium
CO₂: Optional
This is a highly adaptable species that thrives in a wide range of aquarium conditions, making it suitable for both beginner and experienced aquascapers. It performs well even in lower-tech setups.
Growth & Behaviour
The appearance of this plant can vary significantly depending on its environment. In lower light and nutrient conditions, it tends to grow taller with slower growth and more subdued green-brown tones. Under stronger lighting, with good nutrition and added CO₂, it develops more compact growth and richer reddish hues.
Maintenance
Like most Cryptocoryne species, it benefits from a stable environment and may experience initial “crypt melt” when introduced, but will recover and establish over time. Occasional removal of older leaves helps maintain a healthy, tidy appearance.
