Microsorum pteropus 'Windelov' (Tissue Culture)

Microsorum pteropus 'Windelov', commonly known as Java Fern Windelov, is a popular and decorative variant of the classic Java Fern. Known for its highly branched, unique leaf tips, this variety adds elegant texture and visual complexity to any planted aquarium. The intricate fronds create a fine, bushy appearance that sways beautifully in gentle flow.

This tissue culture version is lab-grown, 100% free from algae, pests and snails, making it ideal for introducing into new or established aquascapes. Windelov’s unique look and low-maintenance nature make it a top choice for both beginners and experienced aquascapers.

How to Use in the Aquarium

As an epiphytic plant, Java Fern Windelov is best attached to driftwood, lava rock, or aquarium decor. Avoid burying the rhizome in substrate, as it can lead to rot. Once anchored, the roots will naturally attach over time.

Ideal uses:

  • Foreground or midground on hardscape in nano or medium tanks

  • Feature plant for low-tech nature-style or jungle-style aquascapes

  • Shaded areas where other plants may struggle

  • Alongside mosses and Bucephalandra for a textured plant palette

Tissue culture portions should be rinsed and gently separated before attaching or planting.

Maintenance

Microsorum 'Windelov' is one of the easiest plants to care for in the hobby, making it perfect for low-tech aquariums and beginner setups.

  • Lighting: Low to medium (tolerates shade very well)

  • CO₂: Not required, but promotes faster growth

  • Fertilisation: Occasional water column dosing is beneficial

  • Flow: Moderate water movement helps keep leaves clean

  • Trimming: Easy to shape—remove older leaves or trim rhizome to control spread

It grows slowly but steadily, making it a long-lasting and low-effort addition to your tank.

Emersed Growth

Java Fern Windelov can also grow emersed, making it a good candidate for paludariums, ripariums, and Wabi-Kusa setups. In emersed form, the plant retains its lace-like fronds and requires high humidity and regular misting to stay healthy.

Emersed notes:

  • Slower growth rate but stable and resilient

  • Leaf shape remains similar to submerged form

  • Can produce plantlets on older leaves (even when emersed)

  • Great for driftwood backgrounds or high-humidity terrariums

Because tissue culture is grown in sterile gel, transitioning to emersed or submerged growth is smooth and adaptation is quick.
