Bolbitis heudelotii (Tissue Culture)

Bolbitis heudelotii, commonly known as the African Water Fern, is a classic favourite in the aquascaping world—known for its graceful, deep green fronds and unique, fern-like texture. Grown in tissue culture format, it arrives algae- and pest-free, making it ideal for introducing into clean, controlled aquascapes.

This species produces delicate, finely divided leaves that sway gently in the current, creating a lush, natural feel in river-style or jungle-style aquascapes. Its medium to large size makes it especially suited for midground or background placement, where it can develop into a striking focal point over time.

How to Use in the Aquarium

As an epiphytic plant, Bolbitis heudelotii should be attached to driftwood, rocks, or other hardscape—never planted directly in the substrate, as burying the rhizome can lead to rot. It's a slow grower but establishes strongly once settled.

Ideal placements:

  • Attached to driftwood in flowing, nature-style aquascapes

  • Along the edges of hardscape in midground or shaded background areas

  • Among Anubias, Bucephalandra, and mosses for a natural, layered look

  • In blackwater biotopes or low-light tanks that replicate its native riverbanks

Tissue culture cups should be rinsed thoroughly and divided into smaller portions before planting or attaching to hardscape.

Maintenance

Bolbitis is known for being low-maintenance, though its slow growth means it requires some patience.

  • Lighting: Low to medium (too much light may cause algae buildup)

  • CO₂: Not required but highly recommended for lush, faster growth

  • Fertilisation: Benefits from water column dosing with micronutrients

  • Flow: Appreciates moderate water flow to reduce algae on fronds

  • Trimming: Minimal—prune only dead or damaged leaves as needed

With proper care, this plant develops a full, elegant shape and becomes a long-lasting anchor in your aquascape.

Emersed Growth

Bolbitis heudelotii can be grown emersed, though it’s less common than submersed use. In emersed setups, such as paludariums or ripariums, its fronds may appear stiffer and more upright.

Emersed notes:

  • Requires high humidity and consistent moisture

  • Growth is slower and more rigid in appearance

  • Can make a beautiful addition to driftwood waterfalls or moss walls

  • Less prone to algae when grown above the waterline

Tissue culture makes transitioning to emersed growth easier, as the plant hasn't yet adapted fully to submersion.
