The Pteropus 'Trident' Fern is a variant of the well-known Java Fern (Microsorum pteropus), it features slender leaves that resemble the prongs of a trident. With its rich green colouration and elegant, flowing form, this plant brings dynamic texture and contrast to freshwater aquariums. It's especially well-suited for naturalistic and jungle-style aquascapes, where its unique leaf shape can stand out while complementing surrounding plants. Hardy and undemanding, the Trident Fern is ideal for both beginner and experienced aquarists seeking a low-maintenance yet eye-catching plant.

How to Use in Aquarium

In aquariums, the Trident Fern does best when attached to hardscape elements like driftwood, rocks, or porous decorations. Unlike rooted plants, it should not be buried in the substrate, as this can lead to rhizome rot. Instead, it can be tied or glued onto surfaces using aquarium-safe materials, allowing its roots to naturally grip over time. This plant is commonly placed in the midground or background of aquascapes, where its textured foliage adds depth and interest. It adapts well to a range of water conditions and thrives in low to moderate lighting, making it perfect for low-tech tanks without CO₂ injection. Its versatility makes it a valuable component of both minimal and densely planted layouts.

Maintenance

Maintenance for the Trident Fern is minimal, thanks to its slow growth rate. It requires only occasional pruning, which involves removing older or damaged leaves by cutting them close to the rhizome. While it can survive without fertilisers, occasional dosing with a liquid fertiliser can promote healthier growth and more vibrant leaves. CO₂ supplementation is not necessary but will definitely boost its development, colouration and overall health in high-tech setups. The plant also propagates naturally by producing small plantlets on the tips of mature leaves. These baby ferns can be separated once they develop roots and attached to new areas within the tank, making propagation straightforward and rewarding.

Emersed Growth

The Trident Fern is also capable of growing emersed, which makes it suitable for use in paludariums, ripariums, and terrariums with high humidity. When grown above water, it retains its distinctive leaf shape.

It requires consistent humidity and indirect light to thrive in an emersed setup. Emersed growth opens creative possibilities for aquarists and terrarium hobbyists, allowing the fern to be incorporated into lush, tropical-style displays that bridge the gap between aquatic and terrestrial environments.
