Limnophila aromatica 'mini'

Limnophila aromatica ‘Mini’ — also known as Limnophila sp. ‘Kalimantan Mini’ — is a compact and rare dwarf variant of the classic Limnophila aromatica. Originating from Southeast Asia, likely Kalimantan (Borneo), this plant is cherished for its fine, lanceolate leaves and delicate coloration that shifts between light green, bronze, and reddish tones under strong lighting.

Unlike its larger relative, L. aromatica ‘Mini’ maintains a shorter, more compact form, making it ideal for smaller aquariums and fine detailing in aquascapes. The slender stems (around 2 mm thick) and delicately serrated leaves (typically 1–2.5 cm long) create a soft, feathery texture that adds natural movement and contrast.

How to Use in the Aquarium

Perfect for foreground to midground placement, this plant brings colour and intricacy to areas that need fine texture or a natural transition between carpets and taller stems.

When planted in small groups, Limnophila aromatica ‘Mini’ forms dense, bushy clusters that show off their full range of colour under good conditions. Its compact growth habit makes it a favourite in Dutch- and nature-style aquascapes, especially when contrasted against broader-leaved plants or dark hardscape materials.

For the best visual effect, arrange several stems together and trim frequently to encourage branching. In nano tanks, it can even be used as a mid-height feature due to its delicate proportions.

Maintenance

This is a moderately demanding stem plant that rewards attention with striking coloration and dense, compact growth.

It thrives under high light, CO₂ injection, and nutrient-rich conditions, particularly with regular micro and macro fertilisation. Softer water (pH 6–7) and stable CO₂ help maintain its vibrant tones.

In lower light, the leaves remain pale green and elongate slightly, while under intense light they take on red and brown hues with contrasting pale midribs.
Propagation is straightforward — simply replant healthy cuttings once they develop roots.

Emersed Growth

Limnophila aromatica ‘Mini’ can also be grown emersed in humid conditions such as paludariums or shallow setups.

When grown this way, its leaves may appear slightly broader and less colourful, and with patience, it may produce small purple to white flowers typical of the species. Transitioning between emersed and submerged growth may cause initial leaf melt, but new aquatic growth will soon emerge.
