Amano shrimp, also known as Japonica or Yamato shrimp, were introduced to the aquarium hobby by Takashi Amano in the early 1980s.
These shrimp are among the best algae eaters for aquariums, and the good news is that they can thrive in a wide range of water parameters.
We appreciate Amano shrimp for aquascaped aquariums because they not only help keep the tank clean, but they also have a nearly transparent appearance, allowing them to blend into their surroundings and keep the focus on the beautiful aquascape.
They are a relatively large species, reaching sizes of 4 to 6 centimeters. You may notice your Amano shrimp carrying eggs, but keep in mind that these eggs will not hatch in freshwater aquariums, as they require a migration to brackish waters to do so.
If you’re looking for a reliable cleanup crew for your aquarium, Amano shrimp are an excellent choice to consider.
