Hygrophila lancea Chai Narrow Leaf is a unique aquatic plant known for its striking appearance and distinct growth habits. Underwater, it develops long, reddish-brown leaves with a lighter-coloured central vein. Hygrophila lancea sp. ‘Chai’ is a slow-growing, variegated cultivar of Hygrophila lancea ‘Araguaia’, native to East Asia and believed to be the result of a natural mutation.
Known for its soft pastel pink tones and low, creeping growth habit, it adds a delicate yet
striking detail to foreground or low midground placements. However, ‘Chai’ is considered an advanced plant due to its sensitivity and specific requirements: very high light, stable CO₂ injection, clean water, strong flow, and a nutrient-rich, low-waste substrate.
How to use Hygrophila lancea chai 'Narrow leaf'
It can be used the same as how you would use the more commonly found 'Lancea Araguaia, usually in the foreground to add pops of colour or focal points. The plant's stems have a creeping growth habit and form compact, low bushes that thrive with a strong CO2 supply and intense lighting.
It’s best introduced to a mature, stable tank, as it’s prone to melting under poor conditions and can suffer from algae in its early stages. Its variegation isn’t always stable and can fade with stress or poor lighting. The biggest challenge is getting it to root, but once established, it becomes more resilient with minimal maintenance. For experienced aquascapers who enjoy a challenge, 'Chai' is a truly rewarding plant and a beautiful, if slightly niche, addition—especially for those who appreciate pink.
Plant Maintenance
Unlike most other Hygrophila species, the Araguaia variety grows slowly, which makes regular trimming essential to maintain its bushy and tidy form. Ideal for experienced aquarists, Hygrophila lancea "Araguaia" requires high light intensity and a nutrient-rich environment to thrive in an aquatic setting.
