ADA Helanthium tenellum 'Broad Leaf'
(Helanthium tenellum Green)
Helanthium tenellum ‘Broad Leaf’ is a charming, grass-like aquarium plant that stands out for its slightly wider, bright green leaves. Closely related to the classic Helanthium tenellum (formerly Echinodorus tenellus), this variety is more compact, with leaf blades up to 2.5 mm wide and a fresh, mid-green tone that adds natural brightness to any aquascape.
Its subtle colour and tidy growth form make it a perfect companion for more colourful species such as Hygrophila pinnatifida or red stem plants, adding texture and contrast without overwhelming the layout.
How to Use in the Aquarium
‘Broad Leaf’ is excellent for use in the foreground or midground, depending on tank size and design:
-
Plant in small clumps across the substrate to create a lush, grassy carpet.
-
Works beautifully in Nature-style layouts to soften stone and wood transitions.
-
Its clean green tones balance red or bronze plants, making it a great accent choice.
Maintenance
Helanthium tenellum ‘Broad Leaf’ is easy to care for, sharing the same requirements as standard H. tenellum:
-
Lighting: Moderate to high lighting promotes compact, healthy growth.
-
CO₂: Optional but beneficial for faster spread and denser carpets.
-
Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs support steady growth.
-
Pruning: Regular trimming encourages the formation of runners and maintains an even, lush lawn.
Emersed Growth
Like other Helanthium species, ‘Broad Leaf’ can grow emersed in humid environments such as paludariums. The leaves become slightly broader and firmer above water, maintaining their vibrant green colour. The plant transitions smoothly between emersed and submerged forms.
