Tropica 1-2 Grow Phyllanthus fluitans (Red Root Floater)

Phyllanthus fluitans, commonly known as Red Root Floater, is a striking floating plant from the tropical waterways of South America. Loved for its vivid colour and elegant surface growth, it brings both beauty and natural function to the aquarium, making it a standout choice for open-top and nature-style setups.

Appearance

This floating plant produces soft, heart-shaped leaves that sit neatly on the water’s surface, each emerging individually along the stem. The leaves are naturally water-repellent and can develop a rich red to copper tone under strong lighting, while maintaining a fresh green base in lower light conditions. On rare occasions, it may also produce small, delicate white flowers above the waterline, adding an extra layer of interest.

Aquascaping Use

Red Root Floater is ideal for surface coverage, creating a natural canopy that softens lighting and adds depth to the aquarium. It works especially well in shrimp tanks, planted displays, and aquascapes where surface movement and contrast are desired. Its trailing roots also provide excellent shelter for fry and microfauna.

Care & Requirements

  • Difficulty: Easy

  • Growth Rate: Medium

  • Height: 3–5 cm (leaf size), with trailing roots

  • Lighting: Low to high (colour intensifies under stronger light)

  • CO₂: Not required (optional)

  • Type: Floating

Colouration is strongly influenced by nutrients and lighting. Higher light encourages red tones, while lower nitrate levels can enhance intensity, though a balanced nutrient supply is still essential for healthy growth.

Growth & Maintenance

Phyllanthus fluitans grows steadily across the surface and can multiply quickly under good conditions. Regular thinning is recommended to prevent excessive shading of plants below and to maintain balanced coverage.

Why Choose Red Root Floater?

  • Stunning red coloration under strong lighting

  • Natural surface coverage and shading

  • Excellent for shrimp and breeding tanks

  • Unique floating growth with trailing roots

Phyllanthus fluitans is a visually striking floating plant that combines vibrant colour, natural function, and effortless movement—perfect for adding life and contrast to any aquarium surface.
