Nerite Snails: A Complete Guide to Care, Varieties, Shipping & Dormancy

If you’re looking for a hardworking little algae eater that also happens to be one of the most attractive snails you can keep, Nerite Snails are difficult to beat.

Peaceful, fascinating to watch and available in an incredible range of colours and shell patterns, Nerites spend much of their time grazing over aquarium glass, rocks, wood and other surfaces in search of algae and biofilm.

From the classic Zebra Nerite to beautiful Red Onion, Batik and Pumpkin Nerites, as well as the smaller and wonderfully unusual Clithon Snails, there is a Nerite to suit almost every established freshwater aquarium.

Why Are Nerite Snails So Popular?

The biggest attraction of Nerite Snails is their appetite for naturally occurring algae and biofilm. They constantly browse hard surfaces in the aquarium, making them a useful addition to an established clean-up crew.

Unlike some pest snails, Nerites also have a major advantage: they don't normally establish multiplying populations in a freshwater aquarium.

Females may still leave small, hard white egg capsules on wood, rocks, glass or decorations, but the larvae of the commonly kept aquarium nerites generally require brackish or marine conditions for successful development. So while you may occasionally see eggs, you won't suddenly find your freshwater aquarium overrun with hundreds of Nerites.

They are also peaceful and generally leave healthy aquarium plants alone.

Meet the Nerites

One of the most enjoyable things about Nerite Snails is the sheer variety of shells. Common names are used extensively within the aquarium trade, and exact scientific identification can sometimes be difficult because shell colour and pattern can vary considerably even within related groups.

Red Onion Nerite

The Red Onion Nerite is a particularly attractive variety, usually displaying rich reddish, orange or brown tones with contrasting darker markings.

The trade name is commonly associated with Vittina semiconica. Their rounded shell and warm colouring make Red Onions especially noticeable against green plants and dark aquarium substrates.

Zebra Nerite

Probably the best-known of them all, the Zebra Nerite has a striking striped shell, typically combining yellow, gold, brown or olive tones with darker bands.

Every snail is slightly different, so even a group of Zebras can display plenty of natural variation.

Zebra Nerites are excellent grazers and can spend hours slowly working their way across aquarium glass and décor.

Batik Nerite

The Batik Nerite is named after the wonderfully intricate patterns found on its shell.

Rather than simple stripes, Batiks can display complicated lines, zigzags and irregular markings reminiscent of patterned batik fabric. "Batik" is primarily an aquarium-trade description rather than a reliable species identification, so you may see different scientific names attached to these snails from different suppliers.

Whatever the exact pattern, they're certainly one of the more decorative Nerites available.

Pumpkin Nerite

With its warm orange, amber and pumpkin-like colouring, the Pumpkin Nerite can really stand out in a planted aquarium.

As with many Nerite trade names, "Pumpkin" generally describes the appearance of the snail rather than providing a definitive scientific identification. Colours and markings therefore vary from one individual to another — which is part of their appeal.

Clithon Snails

Then we have the tiny characters of the Nerite world: Clithon Snails.

Species such as Clithon corona are often sold as Horned Nerites because of the small projections or "horns" extending from their shells.

Clithons tend to stay smaller than many of the larger Nerites and come in some fantastic patterns. Yellow, black, cream and striped individuals are commonly seen, and their unusual shells make them look almost prehistoric.

Like their larger relatives, Clithons spend their time grazing over glass, stone, wood and other established aquarium surfaces.

The Ideal Aquarium for Nerite Snails

Nerites do best in a mature, fully cycled aquarium.

This is important because an established aquarium provides something a brand-new aquarium doesn't: mature surfaces covered with microscopic life, biofilm and natural algae for them to graze.

They generally prefer stable water that is neutral to alkaline and contains sufficient minerals to maintain healthy shell growth. Very soft or acidic water can gradually erode a Nerite's shell, resulting in pale, pitted or damaged areas.

Good water quality is essential. Ammonia and nitrite should be zero, and care should be taken with medications or treatments that may be unsafe for aquatic invertebrates.

Nerites are also surprisingly adventurous!

They naturally explore around the waterline and some will happily climb above it. An aquarium lid or cover with sensible precautions around cable and pipe openings can therefore prevent an ambitious snail from disappearing behind the aquarium.

Water Parameter Suitable Range Notes
Temperature 20–28°C Most are comfortable in tropical aquarium temperatures; avoid sudden changes.
pH 7.0–8.5 Neutral to alkaline water is preferable. Prolonged acidic conditions can contribute to shell erosion.
GH (General Hardness) 6–20 dGH Moderate to hard water provides minerals important for shell growth and maintenance.
KH (Carbonate Hardness) 3–15 dKH Helps maintain a stable pH and provides carbonate important for shell integrity.
Ammonia 0 mg/L Should always be undetectable.

Nitrate Ideally below 20 mg/L Keep low and stable through normal aquarium maintenance.
TDS 150–350 ppm Useful as a general indication of mineralisation, but GH/KH are more informative than chasing a specific TDS number.


Feeding Your Nerite Snails

Nerites are primarily grazers.

You'll often see them travelling slowly across:

  • Aquarium glass

  • Rocks

  • Wood

  • Plant leaves

  • Filter housings

  • Decorations

They're looking for algae, diatoms, biofilm and other edible material growing on those surfaces.

One mistake is assuming that buying a Nerite means you never need to think about feeding it.

A very clean aquarium, particularly a new aquarium may simply not contain enough natural grazing material. Supplemental foods suitable for herbivorous aquatic snails and invertebrates can therefore be offered when natural food is limited.

Ironically, an aquarium can sometimes be too clean for a Nerite!

Why Do We Post Nerite Snails in Damp Tissue Instead of a Bag of Water?

This is one of the questions customers can understandably have when receiving snails through the post.

Your Nerite may arrive wrapped in damp tissue rather than swimming around in a bag of water and this is intentional.

The tissue is kept damp, not soaking wet, so that the snail remains moist during its journey.

There are several advantages to transporting aquatic snails this way. It reduces the amount of water moving around inside the package, provides cushioning around the shell and, importantly, avoids keeping the snail sitting in a small volume of transport water that can deteriorate if waste accumulates during transit.

Damp packing is a well-established method of transporting a number of aquarium snails.

So please don't be alarmed when you open your parcel and discover what appears to be a completely motionless snail wrapped in damp material.

Motionless does not automatically mean dead.

"My Nerite Isn't Moving!" — Dormancy After Transport

This is perhaps the most important thing to know when receiving Nerite Snails through the post.

Nerites can become extremely inactive during and after transport.

Customers sometimes refer to this as the snail going into "hibernation". Strictly speaking, it is better thought of as a dormant or deeply inactive resting state triggered by transport and changes in environmental conditions rather than true seasonal hibernation.

A snail that has just arrived may therefore appear completely lifeless.

  • It may not crawl immediately.
  • It may remain tightly closed.
  • It may sit in exactly the same position for quite some time after being introduced to the aquarium.

This alone doesn't necessarily mean anything is wrong.

Transport involves changes in temperature, moisture, light and surroundings, and some Nerites simply take longer than others to become active again.

How Do I Tell Whether My Nerite Snail Is Dead?

This is where a little patience is important.

Lack of movement by itself isn't a reliable test.

A resting or transport-stressed Nerite can remain still enough to convince you that it hasn't survived, only to start moving later once it has settled.

Instead, look at several signs together.

A living Nerite will commonly remain firmly closed or keep its operculum the little "door" covering the shell opening appropriately positioned. Once it begins waking and settling, you may eventually notice the foot emerging, attachment to a surface or a change of position.

A snail that repeatedly remains completely unresponsive deserves closer inspection.

The most unmistakable warning sign is a strong, unpleasant smell.

A dead aquatic snail decomposes quickly and generally produces a very distinctive foul odour. Tissue visibly deteriorating or hanging loosely from the shell, particularly when combined with a strong smell and complete lack of response, is also a serious indication that the snail has died.

If you're unsure, don't immediately throw away a newly delivered snail simply because it isn't moving.

Give it appropriate conditions and time to recover from transport.

Help My Nerite Is Upside Down!

Nerites aren't always brilliant at righting themselves, particularly on very smooth or loose substrates.

If you notice one upside down, gently place it upright with the shell opening against a stable submerged surface so that its foot has something to grip.

Then leave it undisturbed and allow it to attach in its own time.

Nerite Eggs, Why Are There White Dots Everywhere?

Sooner or later, many Nerite keepers notice tiny hard white dots appearing around the aquarium.

These are usually egg capsules.

They can appear on rocks, wood, decorations and occasionally even on other snail shells.

The good news is that Nerites generally don't reproduce successfully and establish populations in an ordinary freshwater aquarium. Their reproductive cycle typically involves conditions that aren't present in a normal freshwater community tank.

The slightly less good news?

Those little white capsules can be very firmly attached!

If you dislike the appearance of them, this is worth knowing before adding Nerites to highly decorative pieces of dark wood or stone.

Every Nerite Is Unique

One of our favourite things about Nerites is that ordering a particular variety doesn't mean receiving an identical, factory-produced animal.

These are naturally patterned creatures.

Two Red Onion Nerites can look different. One Zebra may have beautifully even bands while another looks almost hand-painted. Batiks can have completely different line patterns, and Pumpkin Nerites can vary considerably in colour and markings.

Even Clithons can vary in shell pattern and the appearance of their characteristic horns.

That's part of the fun.

You're not simply adding an algae grazer to your aquarium,  you're getting a tiny individual with its own unique shell.

A Small Snail With a Big Personality

Nerite Snails are easy to overlook when surrounded by colourful fish and shrimp, but give them a little attention and they're fascinating animals in their own right.

Watching a Zebra methodically clean a piece of stone, spotting a tiny Clithon halfway up the aquarium glass or discovering the extraordinary pattern on a newly arrived Batik makes them much more than simply members of the "clean-up crew".

Give them a mature aquarium, stable water, plenty of grazing opportunities and suitable mineral content, and they can make a beautiful and useful addition to a peaceful freshwater setup.

And remember: if your newly delivered Nerite looks as though it hasn't moved a millimetre, don't panic. After travelling in its damp protective packing, it may simply be in a deeply inactive state and need time to settle and become active again.

Sometimes the little shell that appears to contain absolutely nothing going on is simply taking its time before getting back to work.
