Ludwigia perennis, is a striking North American stem plant prized for its deep red to burgundy foliage and structured, upright form. When grown under the right conditions, it adds dramatic contrast and visual weight to any aquascape, particularly as a background accent or focal grouping.
Appearance
This species develops symmetrical, lanceolate leaves that transition from olive-green at the base to intense purplish-red tones near the tips when exposed to strong lighting and consistent CO₂. The stems grow upright, typically reaching 15–40 cm in height and 5–12 cm in width, forming dense, elegant clusters. In lower light, the plant tends to grow more slowly, with greener leaves and occasional shedding of lower foliage.
Growth & Requirements
While Ludwigia glandulosa can survive in moderate conditions, it truly thrives under high light, stable CO₂ injection, and regular fertilisation, particularly with a steady supply of iron and micronutrients to maintain its rich coloration. Growth is slow to moderate, but the reward is a robust, architectural plant that exudes refinement and depth in well-maintained aquascapes.
Aquascaping Use
Ideal as a background or midground accent, L. glandulosa pairs beautifully with fine-leaved green stems or lighter red species, providing colour balance and vertical structure. When trimmed and replanted regularly, it forms compact groups that emphasise the natural geometry of a planted layout.
