Tropica Hygrophila polysperma

Hygrophila polysperma is widely regarded as one of the hardiest and most adaptable aquarium plants available, making it an excellent choice for newcomers and experienced aquascapers alike. Native to Southeast Asia, this fast-growing stem plant easily adjusts to a broad range of water conditions and lighting levels, often thriving where more delicate species struggle. Its ability to fill space quickly makes it a valuable background plant for establishing lush, full layouts.

Appearance

This species develops slender stems that typically reach 25–40 cm in height with a spread of 4–8 cm. Its leaf shape and colour can vary noticeably depending on lighting conditions—ranging from soft green under low light to more vibrant tones with increased brightness. When allowed to reach the water’s surface, its floating leaves may even produce small plantlets, offering natural and effortless propagation.

How to Use in the Aquarium

Hygrophila polysperma is ideal for midground to background placement, where its fast growth can help fill in empty areas and create a dense, natural appearance. Because it grows rapidly, regular trimming is essential to prevent it from overshadowing or crowding neighbouring plants. The cut stems can be replanted easily, making it a fantastic option for quickly establishing lush greenery in new aquariums.

Lighting & CO₂ Requirements

This plant is extremely forgiving and performs well even under low light, although stronger lighting brings out more defined leaf shapes and richer pigmentation. CO₂ is optional and not required for healthy growth, though supplementation can enhance colour variation and density.

Maintenance

Hygrophila polysperma grows at a moderate to fast pace, meaning trimming will be your most frequent task. Pinching back shoots encourages bushier, horizontal growth and keeps the plant from becoming leggy. Its adaptability and resilience make it one of the easiest background plants to maintain, perfect for low-tech and high-tech setups alike.
