Anubias nana ‘Kirin’ is a beautifully distinctive cultivar known for its deep green colouration and uniquely wavy, textured leaves. Compact and slow-growing, this plant is admired for the sculpted, dragon-like shape of its foliage, which adds a refined and characterful touch to any aquascape. Its hardy nature and low light tolerance make it a fantastic choice for both beginner hobbyists and experienced aquascapers seeking a reliable, decorative rhizome plant.
Appearance
‘Kirin’ forms a dense cluster of 3–4 cm leaves that feature dramatically rippled edges, giving them a crinkled, ornamental look. The dark, glossy leaf surface provides excellent contrast against lighter plants or hardscape, making it an attractive accent in small and large aquariums alike.
How to Use in the Aquarium
Best displayed when attached to wood, rock, or other hardscape, Anubias ‘Kirin’ should never have its rhizome buried in substrate, as this may lead to rot. Its compact size makes it ideal for nano aquariums, foreground detailing, or adding texture to shaded areas of the scape. It also pairs exceptionally well with driftwood-heavy, nature-style layouts.
Lighting & CO₂ Requirements
This plant thrives inlow to moderate lighting, which helps reduce algae accumulation on its slow-growing leaves. CO₂ is optional; while not necessary for survival, supplementation can encourage slightly fuller and healthier growth. Its adaptability makes it suitable for both low-tech and high-tech setups.
Maintenance
With its slow growth rate, maintenance is minimal. Occasional removal of older leaves is all that’s required. Thanks to its durability, it can withstand a wide range of water conditions and is an excellent choice for shrimp, community, or low-maintenance aquariums.
