Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia

Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia is a bold and highly attractive rhizome plant, admired for its large, elongated heart-shaped leaves and deep green colouration. Its robust nature and low maintenance requirements make it a staple in aquascaping, suitable for everything from beginner setups to more advanced, nature-style layouts.

Appearance & Origin

Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia is a cultivated variety known for its broad, rounded leaves that resemble the shape of Caladium foliage. The leaves are thick, firm, and almost leathery in texture, giving the plant excellent durability, even in aquariums with livestock that may nibble on softer plants. Typically reaching 10–15 cm in height, it develops a strong rhizome over time, producing dense clusters of lush, bushy foliage that create a full and natural appearance.

How to Use in the Aquarium

This plant is best suited for midground placement, though it can also be used as a focal point in smaller aquariums. It is ideal for attaching to rocks or driftwood, where it can grow naturally without the risk of rhizome rot. Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia is particularly effective in natural aquascapes, where its large leaves provide contrast against finer plants and help create depth and structure.

Maintenance

Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia is considered very easy to care for and thrives in low to moderate lighting conditions. It prefers stable water parameters, with a pH range of approximately 6.0–7.5 and temperatures between 22–28°C. CO₂ supplementation is not required but can encourage slightly faster growth. Due to its slow growth rate, patience is key, and minimal trimming is needed aside from removing older leaves. The rhizome should always be attached to hardscape rather than buried in substrate to prevent rot.

Anubias barteri var. caladiifolia is a durable and visually striking plant that offers bold structure, rich green colour, and exceptional ease of care. Its resilience and timeless appearance make it a favourite for creating natural, balanced aquascapes.
