Pogostemon helferi – Potted
Pogostemon helferi, commonly known as Downoi (meaning “little star” in Thai), is a distinctive and eye-catching aquatic plant originally discovered by aquarists in Thailand, near the border with Myanmar. Its unique star-shaped growth, beautifully curled leaves and vibrant green colour make it a popular choice for adding texture and character to planted aquariums.
With its naturally compact growth habit, Pogostemon helferi is ideal for the foreground, where it creates an attractive focal point among rocks, driftwood and other aquatic plants. Under suitable conditions, it produces numerous side shoots that develop their own roots, gradually forming dense, bushy clusters that can spread into a lush green carpet.
For the best results, provide moderate to high lighting and a nutrient-rich aquarium substrate to encourage healthy growth and maintain its compact shape. Although supplemental CO₂ is not essential, it can improve growth, promote denser foliage and help the plant thrive. Regular access to nutrients and stable water conditions will also support its development.
Supplied as a potted plant, Pogostemon helferi is an excellent choice for aquascapers looking to introduce an unusual, structured and vibrant green foreground plant to their aquarium.
