Easy to Grow & Extremely Versatile
Java Fern is a rhizome plant, meaning it doesn't need to be planted into the substrate. Instead, it can be attached to driftwood, roots, rocks or other hardscape, where its roots will gradually anchor themselves.
This makes it particularly useful for aquascapes where you want to add greenery directly to your hardscape without disturbing the substrate.
Important: The horizontal rhizome should remain above the substrate. Burying the rhizome can cause it to rot.
With a mature height of around 15–30 cm, Java Fern works particularly well in the midground or background of an aquarium and can be used to soften hardscape and create a natural, established appearance.
Suitable for Almost Any Aquarium
One of Java Fern's biggest advantages is its ability to thrive under a wide range of conditions.
It has low light requirements and does not require CO₂ supplementation, making it an ideal choice for low-tech aquariums. Providing additional CO₂ and nutrients can encourage stronger growth, but they are not essential.
Its slow growth also means it requires very little trimming or maintenance, making it perfect for aquarists who want an attractive planted aquarium without constant pruning.
Black Spots Are Normal!
You may notice small black or dark brown spots underneath the leaves of your Java Fern.
These are not signs of disease or damage. They are sporangia — the plant's natural reproductive structures — and are completely normal.
In fact, seeing these spots is simply part of the natural growth and reproduction of Java Fern.
Easy Propagation
Java Fern is incredibly easy to propagate. The plant can be divided by separating sections of its horizontal rhizome, ensuring each section has healthy leaves and roots.
It can also produce small plantlets from the leaves, which can eventually be separated and attached to your hardscape.
Potted Plant
Potted Java Fern is supplied established in a pot, ready to add to your aquarium.
Once introduced to your setup, it can be planted or attached to your chosen hardscape. Give it time to establish and it will gradually anchor itself and produce new growth.
