A more delicate and compact form of the classic Java Fern, Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow' is an excellent choice for aquascapers looking for the hardiness of Java Fern with a finer, more elegant appearance.
This attractive variety produces long, narrow leaves that grow at a more open angle from the stem than standard Java Fern, creating a graceful, flowing appearance. Its compact size also makes it particularly well suited to smaller aquariums.
A Finer Take on Java Fern
'Narrow' is a naturally variable form of Microsorum pteropus and has become popular for its distinctive foliage.
The slender leaves can reach around 10–20 cm, while the horizontal rhizome can spread to 10–15 cm or more as the plant establishes.
Its fine leaves look particularly effective when attached to driftwood or rock, where they can soften hardscape and create a natural, mature appearance.
Perfect for Wood & Rock
Like other Java Fern varieties, Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow' is a rhizome plant and does not need to be planted into the substrate.
Simply attach the rhizome to driftwood, roots or rocks and allow the plant's roots to naturally anchor themselves over time.
Avoid burying the rhizome in the substrate, as this can cause it to rot.
Its ability to grow directly on hardscape makes it incredibly versatile and allows you to add greenery to areas where conventional rooted plants may be difficult to establish.
Easy & Low Maintenance
Microsorum pteropus 'Narrow' is an easy and highly adaptable aquarium plant with low lighting requirements.
It grows slowly, so regular trimming is rarely necessary, making it an excellent choice for aquarists looking for a low-maintenance plant.
CO₂ supplementation is optional, although additional CO₂ and nutrients can encourage stronger growth.
Great for Smaller Aquariums
With its narrower leaves and more compact growth habit, 'Narrow' is particularly useful in nano and smaller aquariums, where standard Java Fern can sometimes become too large.
It can also be used effectively in larger aquariums as a midground feature or planted across wood and rock to create depth and texture.
