Maidenhair Tree Fern

The Maidenhair Tree Fern is a beautiful and unusual tropical fern known for its elegant, layered fronds and structured growth habit. Its soft green foliage has a delicate appearance similar to a maidenhair fern, but with larger, more architectural fronds that give it a stronger presence in planted displays.

Scientifically known as Didymochlaena truncatula, this species is sometimes called the Mahogany Fern due to the subtle reddish tones that can appear on new growth before maturing to deep green. As it grows, the plant forms upright, arching fronds that create a compact but striking shape, adding height and texture to terrariums, paludariums, or tropical indoor plant collections.

How it differs from a Maidenhair Fern

Although it is sometimes referred to as a “Maidenhair Tree Fern,” it is different from true maidenhair ferns from the genus Adiantum.

Key differences include:

  • Leaf structure: Maidenhair ferns have many small fan-shaped leaflets on thin black stems, while the Maidenhair Tree Fern has larger, more structured fronds.

  • Growth habit: Didymochlaena truncatula grows more upright and architectural, whereas maidenhair ferns tend to form soft, spreading clumps.

  • Hardiness: The Maidenhair Tree Fern is generally more tolerant and easier to maintain than many delicate Adiantum species.

  • New growth colour: This species often produces bronze or reddish young leaves before they turn green.
