Add something a little different to your aquascape with Hygrophila pinnatifida, a striking plant from India known for its distinctive foliage and unusual growth habit.
Its upper leaves feature a beautiful mottled brown and green appearance, while the undersides develop rich burgundy and red tones, making it a fantastic plant for adding colour and contrast to an otherwise green aquascape.
Unlike many conventional stem plants, Hygrophila pinnatifida can be encouraged to grow horizontally across your hardscape, making it particularly useful for creating a natural, established-looking aquascape.
A Unique Aquascaping Plant
Hygrophila pinnatifida is a versatile plant that can be grown in the substrate or attached directly to driftwood and rocks.
When the growing tips are regularly trimmed or pinched out, the plant responds by producing multiple horizontal side shoots. These shoots can spread across your hardscape and readily attach themselves to wood and rock, creating an attractive, creeping effect.
This makes it an excellent choice for adding texture and detail around the hardscape rather than simply growing as a traditional background stem.
Encourage Compact Growth
Regular pruning is the key to getting the best from Hygrophila pinnatifida. Removing the top growth encourages the plant to produce additional side shoots, resulting in a fuller and more compact appearance.
The plant can be used in small groups to create an impressive feature, particularly when placed against a relatively plain background where its unusual foliage and rich colours can really stand out.
Lighting & CO₂
Hygrophila pinnatifida has a medium growth rate and benefits from good lighting. Stronger lighting can encourage more compact growth and help bring out the attractive red and burgundy tones within the foliage.
CO₂ is not essential, but providing additional CO₂ can encourage healthier growth and make it easier to achieve a dense, compact appearance.
A consistent supply of nutrients will also help maintain strong new growth and vibrant foliage.
Potted Plant
Our potted Hygrophila pinnatifida is supplied established in a pot, making it easy to introduce into your aquarium.
Once planted or attached to your chosen hardscape, allow the plant some time to settle in before beginning regular trimming. As it establishes, you can shape the growth to suit your aquascape and encourage it to spread across nearby wood or rocks.
