Hornwort - Ceratophyllum demersum

Hornwort (Ceratophyllum demersum) is a popular submerged aquatic plant commonly used in freshwater aquariums and ponds. It is well-known for its rapid growth, hardiness, and ability to adapt to various water conditions, making it a favorite among both beginner and experienced aquarists.

This plant is characterised by its long, feathery, whorled leaves that can reach lengths of up to 1 meter (about 3 feet). Hornwort has vibrant green foliage that creates a lush, bushy appearance in aquariums, providing an appealing habitat for fish and other aquatic life. It thrives in a range of lighting conditions, from low to high light, with moderate to high lighting promoting denser growth. Hornwort prefers water temperatures between 18°C and 30°C (64°F to 86°F) and can tolerate a wide range of pH levels (6.0 to 7.5) and hardness.

Hornwort benefits from additional nutrients, particularly nitrogen, which supports its growth. However, it can also thrive in low-tech setups by absorbing nutrients directly from the water column. The plant serves several important functions in aquariums, such as providing excellent cover for fish, shrimp, and fry, which helps reduce stress, maintaining water quality by absorbing excess nutrients, and competing with algae for resources, thereby preventing algal blooms. Furthermore, hornwort contributes to oxygenation in the water, enhancing the overall aquatic ecosystem.
