Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green'
A classic favourite for planted aquariums, Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green' is a hardy and versatile aquatic plant with attractive green foliage and a compact growth habit. Its manageable size makes it an excellent choice for smaller aquariums, while its low light requirements make it a great option for both beginners and more experienced aquascapers.
As it matures, the plant forms a dense rosette of leaves, creating a natural-looking focal point in the foreground or midground of the aquarium.
A Versatile & Hardy Cryptocoryne
Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green' is one of those plants that fits comfortably into a wide range of aquarium setups. It can be planted individually to create defined areas of greenery or grouped together to form a fuller, more substantial planting.
When grown in an open area with plenty of space, the leaves can develop a low, spreading appearance, with the foliage sitting close to the substrate. This makes it particularly attractive for creating a natural foreground or low midground planting.
Like many Sri Lankan Cryptocoryne varieties, it is also well suited to harder water, making it a useful choice for aquariums where softer-water plants may be more difficult to grow.
Easy to Grow
One of the biggest advantages of Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green' is its low light requirement. It doesn't require intense lighting or CO₂ to thrive, making it an excellent choice for low-tech aquariums.
CO₂ supplementation can encourage stronger growth, but it is optional.
Once established, the plant is relatively undemanding. Like many Cryptocorynes, it can take some time to settle into a new aquarium, but once established it will reward you with steady, healthy growth.
Planting & Care
Plant Cryptocoryne wendtii 'Green' directly into the aquarium substrate, ensuring that the crown of the plant remains above the substrate.
A nutrient-rich substrate or the occasional root fertiliser can help encourage healthy root development and strong growth.
Cryptocorynes can sometimes shed or lose older leaves after being introduced to a new aquarium as they adapt to their new environment. This is commonly referred to as 'Crypt melt'. Don't be discouraged — if the roots and crown remain healthy, new growth will usually emerge once the plant has adapted.
