Cryptocoryne beckettii 'Petchii' is a compact and attractive Cryptocoryne from Sri Lanka, making an excellent choice for the midground of planted aquariums. Its elongated leaves feature beautifully textured, slightly fluted edges, with colours ranging from green through to rich olive and reddish-brown tones.
As the plant settles into your aquarium, the leaves can develop a particularly attractive dark olive-brown colour with violet tones underneath, adding subtle depth and contrast to an aquascape.
A Beautiful & Versatile Cryptocoryne
'Petchii' is a relatively small variety, with leaves typically reaching around 10–15 cm in length, although the overall plant can grow to approximately 20 cm depending on aquarium conditions.
Its compact size makes it particularly useful for smaller aquariums or as a midground plant in larger aquascapes. It works beautifully when planted amongst rocks, wood and contrasting green plants.
One of the most appealing features of Cryptocoryne 'Petchii' is the variation it can display. Leaf shape and colour can change depending on lighting, nutrients, water chemistry and other aquarium conditions, meaning the plant can develop its own unique appearance once established.
Easy to Grow
Despite its attractive appearance, Cryptocoryne 'Petchii' is an easy and relatively undemanding plant. It can thrive under low to moderate lighting and requires little or no additional CO₂, making it suitable for low-tech aquariums.
Consistent water quality, regular maintenance and a steady supply of nutrients will help the plant establish and produce healthy new growth.
Avoid making sudden changes to water parameters where possible, as Cryptocorynes can be sensitive to rapid environmental changes.
Crypt Melt – Don't Panic!
Like many Cryptocoryne species, 'Petchii' may experience Crypt melt when first introduced to a new aquarium.
This is a common reaction as the plant adapts to its new underwater environment and is not necessarily a sign that the plant is dying. Existing leaves may deteriorate or disappear, but if the root system and crown remain healthy, the plant will usually produce new leaves once it has adapted.
During this period, maintain stable water parameters and continue providing suitable nutrients. With a little patience, new growth should begin to emerge.
Natural Propagation
Once established, Cryptocoryne 'Petchii' can spread naturally by producing runners (stolons) from the main plant. These can eventually develop into new plants, allowing a small group to gradually fill out an area of your aquascape.
