Red Cherry Shrimp are a popular and vibrant freshwater shrimp species, prized by aquarium enthusiasts for their bold colouration and fascinating behaviours, these little critter are full of character and add interest to any aquarium. 

Common Name:

Red Cherry Shrimp (also called Red Neocaridina)

Scientific Name:

Neocaridina davidi

Colour Variant:

Bright to deep red, depending on grade (e.g., Sakura, Fire Red, Painted Fire Red)

Size:

  • Adult size: ~1–1.5 inches (2.5–3.8 cm)

Lifespan:

  • Around 1–2 years+ with proper care

Cherry Shrimp Water Parameters:

Shrimp are very sensitive to water quality and must only be added to cycled tanks to ensure survival.

  • Temperature: 18–26°C / 65–78°F

  • pH: 6.5–8.0

  • GH: 4–8

  • KH: 3–15 (optimal 2 - 4)

  • TDS: 150–250 ppm

Tank Size:

  • Minimum 20 litres, though larger is better for stability and colony growth

Behaviour and Temperament:

  • Peaceful, non-aggressive

  • Active scavengers

  • Do well in groups

  • Can coexist with small, non-aggressive tankmates

Diet:

  • Omnivorous: algae, biofilm, blanched vegetables, shrimp-specific pellets, and occasional protein sources

  • We feed all of our shrimp in store the Shrimp Pro foods range, all of the shrimp we sell are also fed this and happily take it. 

Breeding:

  • Easy to breed in freshwater

  • Females carry eggs (berried) for ~3–4 weeks

  • Hatch as miniature versions of adults (no larval stage)

Aquascaping & Environment:

  • Thrive in planted tanks with mosses and hiding spots

  • Beneficial to ecosystems as natural cleaners, feeding on detritus and algae
