Blueberry Snail - Rare freshwater snail

The Blueberry Snail is a distinctive fully aquatic freshwater species known for its rich, deep reddish shell and calm, slow-moving nature. Unlike many more common aquarium snails, this species stands out for its unique coloration and more deliberate behaviour, making it an interesting addition to planted aquariums and peaceful community setups.

Blueberry Snails spend most of their time grazing on surfaces, feeding on biofilm, soft algae, and naturally occurring microorganisms. They prefer well-established aquariums with plenty of surfaces to explore, such as rocks, driftwood, and plant leaves. Their gentle grazing behaviour makes them suitable for planted tanks, as they do not damage healthy aquatic plants.

This species thrives in stable water conditions and benefits from a mature aquarium environment as they can be sensitive. They are peaceful and do best when kept with other calm tank inhabitants such as shrimp and small community fish. Because of their slower movement and specialised feeding habits, they should not be relied upon as primary algae eaters but rather appreciated for their natural behaviour and unique appearance.

Due to this snail being fully aquatic they are less risky to keep in a open top aquarium than other snails like nerite snails. There is a risk they might try leave if water quality is not correct.

  • Aquascapes needing a unique focal detail
