Begonia pavonina

Begonia pavonina, commonly known as the Peacock Begonia, is a rare and striking rhizomatous species native to the montane forests of peninsular Malaysia. This begonia is renowned for its iridescent blue foliage, which shimmers under low light conditions, resembling the vibrant hues of a peacock's tail feathers. The undersides of the leaves are a rich burgundy, adding to its dramatic appearance. The plant produces delicate white to pale pink flowers, though it's primarily cultivated for its ornamental foliage.

Cultivation

  • Light: Prefers medium to bright indirect light. Direct sunlight can scorch the leaves, so it's best to provide filtered light.

  • Watering: Maintain consistently moist soil. Allow the top 2–3 inches to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot.

  • Humidity: Thrives in high humidity environments, ideally between 60–80%.

  • Temperature: Optimal growth occurs between 55°F (13°C) and 75°F (24°C). Avoid temperatures below 50°F (10°C).

  • Soil: Use a well-draining mix, such as sphagnum moss combined with perlite, to ensure proper aeration and moisture retention.

Begonia pavonina is best suited for terrariums, humid greenhouses, or vivariums where temperature and humidity levels can be controlled. Its unique iridescence is most pronounced under low light conditions, and the angle of observation can enhance the shimmering effect. This begonia is a collector's plant, appreciated for its rare beauty and the challenge it presents to cultivators.

Plant comes with between 3 and 5 leaves
