Anubias barteri var. barteri ‘Variegated’
Anubias barteri var. barteri ‘Variegated’ is a stunning and highly distinctive aquatic plant, prized for its broad leaves and striking white and green variegation. Combining the familiar hardiness of Anubias with unusual pale foliage, this eye-catching variety brings contrast, texture and a touch of exclusivity to planted aquariums.
Each leaf displays its own unique pattern of creamy white, pale green and darker green markings, making every plant slightly different. The broad, leathery foliage creates a bold visual feature against dark driftwood, natural stone and lush green aquatic plants. Its unusual colouring makes it an excellent choice for aquascapers looking to introduce something truly distinctive to their aquarium.
Like other Anubias varieties, it grows from a thick rhizome and develops slowly, making it a relatively low-maintenance addition once established. It is best positioned in the foreground or midground, attached to driftwood, rocks or other suitable hardscape, where its distinctive foliage can be appreciated without being overshadowed by taller plants.
Although it retains many of the hardy characteristics associated with Anubias, its variegated leaves require a little extra care. The white areas contain less chlorophyll than green tissue, meaning growth can be slower and the leaves more susceptible to algae. Low to moderate lighting, stable water conditions and a gentle flow around the foliage will help keep the plant looking its best. Supplemental CO₂ is not essential, although it may encourage healthier growth.
Whether used as a standout specimen or as part of a carefully designed aquascape, Anubias barteri var. barteri ‘Variegated’ is an exceptional choice for adding unusual colour and elegant structure to a freshwater aquarium.
How to Plant
Carefully remove the plant from its pot and gently rinse away any growing medium around the roots. Rather than burying it in the substrate, attach the rhizome to driftwood or rock using aquarium-safe glue or thread. The roots will gradually anchor themselves to the hardscape as the plant establishes.
Important: Keep the rhizome exposed and never bury it in the substrate, as this can cause it to rot. Position the plant in a low to moderately lit area to help reduce algae growth on the pale leaves.
