ADA Echinodorus major

Echinodorus major, often known as the Ruffled Amazon Sword, is a large and elegant rosette plant valued for its long, lightly ruffled green leaves and natural, flowing form. It brings a strong sense of scale and movement to an aquascape, making it an ideal choice for larger aquariums or layouts aiming for a more natural, riverbank-inspired feel.

Originating from South America, this species grows along shallow waterways and adapts well to aquarium conditions, developing broad, undulating leaves that create texture and depth within the layout.

How to Use in the Aquarium

Due to its size and structure, Echinodorus major is best used as:

  • A background feature plant in most aquascapes

  • A statement focal point in larger tanks

  • A natural backdrop in jungle-style or biotope layouts

Its flowing, ruffled leaves add a softer contrast to hardscape such as wood and stone, helping to create a more organic and established look.

Planting & Growth

Echinodorus species are heavy root feeders, so a nutrient-rich substrate is essential for long-term success.

  • Plant directly into the substrate, ensuring the crown remains just above the soil line

  • Use root tabs regularly to support strong growth

  • Medium to bright lighting will encourage fuller, healthier development

Under the right conditions, this plant can reach 30–50 cm or more in height, so adequate space should be allowed when planning your layout.

Maintenance

Echinodorus major is considered easy to grow and adapts well to a wide range of aquarium conditions.

  • Lighting: Medium to high

  • CO₂: Not required, but beneficial

  • Fertilisation: Heavy root feeder — regular feeding recommended

  • Trimming: Remove older outer leaves to maintain shape and encourage new growth

Iron supplementation can help maintain strong, healthy green coloration in the leaves.

Emersed Growth

This species can also be grown emersed in high-humidity environments such as paludariums. In emersed form, leaves may appear broader and more upright, while submerged growth develops the characteristic long, flowing shape.
