ADA Jungle Plant - Begonia vankerckhovenii

Begonia vankerckhovenii is a rare and captivating species of miniature rhizomatous Begonia, known for its compact growth, elegant leaf shape, and subtle colouration.  It is found in parts of Africa such as Gabon and the Democratic of Congo.

This species thrives in warm, humid, and shaded forest environments. Its small, ovate leaves feature a soft green hue that may take on silvery or bronze tones under the right lighting. The plant’s fine, creeping rhizomes and restrained size make it especially suited for terrariums, paludariums, or as part of a detailed indoor plant collection.

This Begonia stands out not through bold colours or large foliage, but through its refined, understated beauty. Each leaf grows on a slender, slightly reddish stem, it contrasts well with mosses, ferns, or darker-leaved plants. Due to its small size, it’s often used as a foreground or accent plant in high-humidity enclosures, where it brings texture and depth without overwhelming the composition.

Caring for Begonia vankerckhovenii requires stable conditions, particularly high humidity of around 70% and indirect or diffused light. It does best in a well-draining, airy substrate rich in organic material, such as a mix of fine orchid bark, leaf litter, and sphagnum moss. Overwatering or stagnant conditions should be avoided, as the rhizome is prone to rot if kept too wet. This species appreciates consistent warmth and should be kept away from cold drafts or temperature drops below 16°C . Like many rhizomatous begonias, it is sensitive to overly dry air and will thrive in a closed terrarium or greenhouse setup.

The occasional flower bloom is a bonus, with delicate yellow flowers that rise slightly above the foliage.
