Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Mi Oya’ is a captivating and highly sought-after variation of the classic Cryptocoryne wendtii, found exclusively along the Mi Oya River in Sri Lanka. This unique geographic origin gives the plant its characteristic appearance and remarkable hardiness, making it a standout choice for both seasoned aquascapers and beginners looking for a reliable, eye-catching rosette plant.
Appearance
This variety features beautifully textured, red-brown leaves with a subtly hammered surface, adding depth and visual interest to the aquascape. Reaching heights of 20–35 cm and forming rosettes 15–30 cm wide, ‘Mi Oya’ brings a bold, natural focal point to the midground or background of the aquarium.
How to Use in the Aquarium
Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Mi Oya’ thrives as a midground feature plant, where its rich colouration and broad leaf structure provide contrast against finer textures. Like other crypts, it performs exceptionally well in stable environments and adapts to a variety of aquascaping styles—from nature-style layouts to classic community tanks. It is ideal for adding depth and structure, especially in tanks with darker substrates that enhance its earthy tones.
Lighting & CO₂ Requirements
This plant is undemanding and grows reliably even under low light, making it suitable for low-tech aquariums. CO₂ is optional and not required for healthy growth, though it may encourage slightly faster and fuller development. Its colouration remains strong across a range of lighting intensities.
Maintenance
A hardy species, ‘Mi Oya’ is tolerant of warm conditions, reflecting its natural habitat where water temperatures often exceed 30°C. Once established, it requires minimal care. Occasional removal of older leaves keeps the rosette tidy, and the plant will gradually expand over time. As with other crypts, a brief adjustment period may occur after planting, but it stabilises quickly.
