Monosolenium tenerum is a unique and visually striking liverwort, often chosen for its soft, cushion-like growth and rich green colouration. Its delicate, organic form brings a natural, almost wild texture to aquascapes, making it a popular choice for creating subtle detail in the foreground or around hardscape. Although sometimes confused with Riccia or Pellia, Monosolenium offers a heavier, more structured appearance.
Appearance & Origin
Native to Asia, Monosolenium tenerum is a liverwort with flattened, branching fronds that form dense, irregular mats. Growing to a height of around 2–5 cm, it develops into lush, rounded cushions that sit low in the aquarium. Its deep green tones and slightly translucent texture give it a vibrant, healthy appearance under a wide range of lighting conditions. Due to its resemblance to other liverworts, it is often mistakenly identified as Pellia, though its growth is typically thicker and less floating in nature.
How to Use in the Aquarium
Monosolenium tenerum is best used in the foreground or attached to hardscape such as stones and driftwood. It is commonly tied down using fishing line or thread, as it does not naturally attach as firmly as some mosses. Once secured, it creates beautiful, cushion-like formations that add depth and contrast to the aquascape. It can also be placed in small clumps among carpeting plants like Eleocharis to create a more natural, layered effect.
Maintenance
This plant is considered easy to care for once established. While initially delicate and prone to breaking apart if not secured properly, it becomes far more stable over time. It thrives in low to moderate lighting and does not require CO₂ supplementation, though added CO₂ can improve growth and overall density. Minimal trimming is required, but occasional maintenance will help keep its shape compact and prevent excessive buildup.
Summary
Monosolenium tenerum is a distinctive and attractive liverwort that adds soft texture and natural detail to freshwater aquariums. With its cushion-like growth, low maintenance requirements, and versatility in placement, it is an excellent choice for both beginner and experienced aquascapers.
