ADA Mayaca sp.
Mayaca is a delicate and graceful stem plant native to the freshwater systems of South America, particularly Paraguay. Known for its slender, soft green to red needle-like leaves, this plant creates a flowing, almost feathery effect in the aquarium. It forms tall, dense stands that sway with the current, making it a favourite in nature-style aquascapes. Typically growing 20–50 cm in height and 3–6 cm in width, it brings lightness and texture to the aquarium.
How to Use in the Aquarium
This Mayaca variety is ideal as a midground to background accent, especially in tanks with gentle water flow that enhances its soft, waving appearance. Its green colouration which can turn orange - red in high lighting. Plant in dense groups to create a lush backdrop or to frame bolder focal points. For optimal growth and colouration, it thrives under moderate to high light with added CO₂ and a nutrient-rich substrate, it can be grown without CO2, however growth and appearance won't be as optimal.
Maintenance
Mayaca fluviatilis is moderately demanding and benefits from a stable, high-nutrient environment. It requires regular trimming to prevent excessive vertical growth and to maintain bushiness. If light levels are insufficient or nutrients are lacking, the stems may become spindly and lose density. A steady supply of micronutrients and iron will help sustain vibrant green hues and compact leaf growth. Soft, slightly acidic to neutral water is preferred.
Emersed Growth
In emersed conditions, this plant takes on a slightly stiffer structure, with leaves that are still narrow but not as soft as in submerged form. It can be grown in high-humidity environments such as terrariums or paludariums, though it is less common in emersed displays compared to its submerged use. Transitioning from emersed to submerged growth often leads to a temporary change in leaf form, followed by fine needle-like regrowth underwater.
