ADA Hygrophilla odora
Hygrophila odora is a rare and elegant stem plant known for its fragrant foliage—an uncommon trait among aquarium plants. Native to parts of South and Southeast Asia, this species offers a soft, bushy appearance with narrow, lanceolate leaves in shades of green that can develop subtle reddish hues under strong lighting. Reaching heights of 20–50 cm and spreading 5–10 cm wide, it brings a natural, slightly untamed look to planted aquariums. While not as common as other Hygrophila species, its graceful growth and unique scent when handled make it a standout.
How to Use in the Aquarium
In aquascapes, Hygrophila odora is best used as a midground to background plant. Its light, flowing form complements both structured layouts and wild, nature-style tanks. Plant it in small groups or mixed into dense vegetation zones to create a soft visual transition between plant layers. It thrives in a well-lit, CO₂-enriched environment, where it can develop a more compact form and slight reddish highlights at the tips.
Maintenance
Hygrophila odora is a relatively fast grower and requires regular trimming to maintain shape and prevent overshadowing neighboring plants. It responds well to propagation via stem cuttings—simply replant trimmed tops into the substrate. Though not particularly demanding, it benefits from a nutrient-rich environment and consistent micronutrient dosing to maintain healthy, vibrant foliage. Without sufficient light, it may grow leggy or lose color intensity.
Emersed Growth
When grown emersed, Hygrophila odora develops slightly thicker stems and broader leaves, and its distinctive aromatic scent becomes more noticeable—hence the name "odora." It can produce small purple or blue flowers in high humidity settings, such as terrariums or emersed plant nurseries. Emersed growth is sturdy and adaptable, making it a good candidate for paludariums. Transitioning to submerged growth typically involves a change in leaf form, with softer, narrower leaves replacing the emersed ones.
