Like other aquatic ferns, it does not root into the substrate but instead attaches itself to hardscape such as driftwood, rocks, or porous decor via its creeping rhizome. Over time, it will anchor firmly and spread slowly, creating a lush, cascading appearance that adds depth and structure to aquascapes. Its darker coloration and delicate texture make it ideal for creating contrast with lighter or finer-leaved plants, and it is particularly effective in shaded areas of the tank.

Plant Maintenance

Caring for Bolbitis heudelotii is relatively straightforward, though it does best in stable, mature aquariums. It prefers moderate to low light, as intense lighting can lead to algae buildup on its slow-growing leaves. While not dependent on CO₂ injection, it does respond well to it, showing healthier, fuller growth under enriched conditions. Regular dosing of water column fertilizers is recommended since it absorbs nutrients through its leaves and rhizome. Avoid burying the rhizome in substrate to prevent rot. Emersed

Bolbitis heudelotii can also be grown emersed in high-humidity environments, such as ripariums, terrariums, or paludariums. When grown emersed, it forms tougher, more leathery leaves, adapting well as long as it remains in a warm, moist environment with consistent humidity. It’s often used in setups that blur the line between land and water, adding a lush, tropical flair with its distinctive fern-like fronds. Keeping the rhizome moist and partially exposed to air encourages steady emersed growth.
