Myriophyllum mattogrossense is one of the finest-textured stem plants available for freshwater aquariums. Native to South America, this elegant species is prized for its soft, feathery foliage that creates movement, depth and a natural appearance within an aquascape.
Despite its delicate look, it is a relatively easy plant to grow, making it suitable for both beginners and experienced aquascapers. Its rapid growth and vibrant green colour make it an excellent choice for filling background areas while providing shelter for fish, shrimp and fry.
Appearance
The defining feature of Myriophyllum mattogrossense is its finely divided, feather-like leaves, which are arranged in attractive whorls around each stem. Under good lighting, the foliage spreads into a soft fan shape, giving the plant a light, flowing appearance that contrasts beautifully against broader-leaved species and hardscape.
Healthy plants display bright green foliage, while the stems can develop subtle reddish to bronze tones under stronger lighting. As it grows into dense groups, it creates a natural sense of depth and movement within the aquarium.
Use in the Aquarium
Myriophyllum mattogrossense is best suited to the background of planted aquariums, where its height and delicate texture can be fully appreciated. Maintenance
As a fast-growing stem plant, Myriophyllum mattogrossense benefits from regular trimming to maintain its attractive shape and prevent it from shading itself or neighbouring plants.
When the lower sections begin to lose foliage or become leggy, simply remove the older stems and replant the healthy tops. This rejuvenates the planting and keeps it looking dense and vibrant.
For the best results, provide a consistent fertiliser regime and maintain good water circulation throughout the aquarium. Although CO₂ injection is optional, additional CO₂ will encourage stronger growth, tighter internodes and a much bushier appearance.
