ADA Wabi-Kusa Mat - Taxiphyllum sp. ‘Peacock Moss’
Peacock Moss (Taxiphyllum sp. 'Peacock') is a lush, slow-growing aquatic moss prized for its delicate, feathery fronds that resemble the spread of a peacock’s tail. It boasts a deep green hue and a semi-upright, slightly cascading growth habit that creates soft, textured accents in any aquascape. With a more defined structure than Java Moss and a distinctive branch pattern, Peacock Moss adds both depth and visual interest to planted tanks, terrariums, or paludariums.
How to Use in the Aquarium
Peacock Moss is incredibly versatile. Attach it to driftwood, rocks, or mesh with thread or aquarium-safe glue to create natural-looking carpets, moss walls, or cascading effects from hardscape features. It also works well in shaded foregrounds, nestled between stones, or draped over branches to simulate natural aquatic environments. It thrives in low to medium light but shows more compact and defined growth under higher light with CO₂ supplementation.
Maintenance
Peacock Moss is low-maintenance and well-suited for beginners and experienced aquascapers alike. Trim regularly to maintain its shape and prevent overgrowth, especially in high-light setups where it grows more quickly. While not a heavy nutrient consumer, clean water and occasional micronutrient dosing help maintain lush, healthy growth. Like all mosses, it can collect debris, so gentle water flow and occasional rinsing during maintenance are beneficial.
Emersed Growth
Peacock Moss adapts readily to emersed conditions and is often used in terrariums or paludariums where high humidity is maintained. Its fronds remain dense and ornamental, though slightly stiffer and more upright than when submerged. Emersed growth can also allow the moss to spread more quickly, making it ideal for vertical surfaces or background textures in humid environments.
Benefits of Using a Wabi-Kusa Mat
These mats are suitable for various aquascaping styles, including paludariums, aquariums, and terrariums. They can be placed in emersed setups such as the DOOA paluda range and ADA mizukusa walls to create a living backdrop. Other plants can be tied to them that tolerate emersed but humid growth conditions including jungle plants and aquatic plants. You can use them to cultivate moss or place directly in the aquarium to create a moss carpet.
