Eleocharis parvula is a beautifully compact carpeting plant known for its fine, grass-like appearance and its ability to create vibrant, natural-looking foreground lawns. This low-growing species spreads through short runners that form close to the parent plant, gradually developing into a lush, dense carpet with the right care. Its bright green colour and soft texture make it an ideal choice for aquascapers aiming to achieve an elegant, meadow-like effect in both small and large aquariums.
Appearance
Featuring thin, arching blades that typically reach 5–10 cm in height, Eleocharis parvula brings a clean, minimalistic aesthetic to the aquascape. When planted in small bunches arranged close together, it quickly unites into a seamless, flowing mat that enhances depth, contrast, and greenery in the layout.
How to Use in the Aquarium
This species is best suited for the foreground, though it can also be used midground in nano tanks due to its slightly taller growth compared to dwarf hairgrass variants. Planting in small clusters encourages even spreading, and its fast growth rate makes it an excellent option for establishing a carpet quickly. It pairs beautifully with stones, wood, and open scape designs.
Lighting & CO₂ Requirements
Eleocharis parvula grows well under medium lighting, which ensures compact, healthy carpets and prevents excessive vertical growth. CO₂ is optional but recommended for the most vibrant results and faster spreading. Even in low-tech setups, it remains manageable and adaptable.
Maintenance
Maintenance is straightforward—regular trimming helps maintain a neat, even carpet and encourages fresh, horizontal runners. Its rapid growth means it recovers quickly from pruning and adapts well to a wide range of water conditions, making it a favourite for beginners and experienced aquascapers alike.
