Echinodorus Red Devil

Echinodorus 'Red Devil' is a bold and eye-catching sword plant cultivar, prized for its deep red to maroon leaves and striking presence in the aquarium.

With its broad, slightly ruffled foliage and vibrant colouration, ‘Red Devil’ adds drama and visual appeal to aquascape. Under strong light and nutrient-rich conditions, the plant’s red tones intensify, becoming a fiery centerpiece in the aquarium.

Its rosette growth form and upright stature make it ideal for midground to background placement in medium to large tanks, where it can grow into a commanding focal point over time.

How to Use in the Aquarium

Echinodorus 'Red Devil' should be planted directly into the substrate, allowing its roots to spread and anchor securely. A nutrient-rich substrate or root tabs will support optimal development and colouration.

Ideal placements:

  • Midground feature in larger tanks, flanked by smaller crypts or grasses

  • Background in aquascapes where vertical height and bold color are needed

  • Highlight plant in a minimal layout

Maintenance

While easy to grow, this Echinodorus benefits from proper care to achieve its best form and color.

  • Lighting: Medium to high (strong lighting enhances red coloration)

  • CO₂: Recommended for vibrant growth and deeper hues but not essential

  • Fertilisation: Regular root fertilisation is essential; water column dosing helps, too

  • Trimming: Remove older or damaged outer leaves to encourage new growth

  • Flow: Moderate flow is beneficial, but avoid direct strong currents

With the right conditions, Echinodorus 'Red Devil' develops into a lush, crimson crown that dominates the aquascape with elegance and strength.

Emersed Growth

Echinodorus species, including ‘Red Devil’, can be grown emersed and are often used in ripariums, paludariums, or emergent aquascapes. In emersed form, leaves appear thicker and rounder, often with slightly muted colouration compared to submersed growth.

Emersed notes:

  • Requires high humidity and moist substrate

  • Leaf colouration is less intense than submersed form

  • Flowering is more likely in emersed conditions

  • Can be transitioned between emersed and submersed with care
